Equipment List for Acrylics

Acrylic Painting Equipment and Supplies

Equipment will be discussed at the first meeting, if you have any questions on what to buy. The following are only suggestions for basic equipment, if you have supplies already that will suffice, you don’t need to buy anything else unless you need it.

Brushes - 2” (or larger) Blending Brush (Haki) the bristles should be very soft

#10 Flat Bristle Brush; #4 or #6 Flat Bristle Brush; #4 or #6 Flat Sable Brush; # 4 Round Sable Brush; # 3 Liner. Acrylic brushes have long handles and are also used for oils. The liner is the only one with a short handle because it is a watercolor brush. You can find inexpensive (under $20) sets of bristle brushes that work great. No need to spend a lot of money on one or two brushes.

Colors - Titanium White (Bleached),
Cadmium Yellow Light
Napthal Red (sometimes called Grumbacher Red or Winsor Red)
Cadmium Orange Burnt Sienna
Hooker’s Green Sap Green
(French) Ultra Marine Blue Dioxizine Purple

Optional additional colors:
Thalo Yellow Green Alizarin Crimson
Cobalt Blue Cadmium Red Light
Burnt Umber.

Do not buy a brand called “Basics” they are too thin for this technique. Most manufactures have good students grade paints with one exception: Liquatex Basics. It may be fine for print making or using like a watercolor but it is too thin for our purposes, please do not get this paint for class, it will only give you problems. The other brands are fine. (see example below)

Palette – Most anything can be used from commercial palettes or meat trays to put paints out on, but it is helpful to have an area where you can mix. Having a piece of plexi-glass or spare meat tray to mix in is helpful because they are easy to clean. Also any kind of dish or plate that you can cover with an air tight seal or put in a plastic bag will work.

Canvas – You can use stretched canvas, canvas boards, canvas pads, or gessoed masonite boards. Size is up to the student though I suggest at least 11” x 15””. Also because of limited class space, no larger than 28” maximum in any direction.

Other supplies to have – Spray bottle for water, paper towels, single edge razor blade, Gesso, soft vine charcoal or charcoal pencil, white chalk. Permanent fine tipped marker. Easels should be available in the class, however, if you have a tabletop easel or easel you want to work on, it is okay to bring it.
